About the event

Purpose of the event

To help young people in Kenya and across Africa start and grow profitable agribusinesses, strengthen household food security, and prepare homes, farms, health and businesses for the short rains, by connecting them with development partners, lenders, insurers, input suppliers, off-takers, agri-tech platforms and climate experts. The session turns the conversation into real introductions.

Objectives

1. Show young people practical routes into agribusiness: high-value crops, livestock, value addition, aggregation and agri-services. 2. Connect young farmers and agri-entrepreneurs with finance, crop and livestock insurance, inputs, markets and training. 3. Share practical steps to protect homes, farms, health and businesses before the short rains: flood preparedness, water harvesting, storage and disease prevention. 4. Strengthen household and community food security. 5. Advance SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Background

Agriculture employs most rural Kenyans, yet few young people see it as a business, and farmers are ageing. At the same time, food prices and erratic weather put household food security at risk, and each rainy season brings floods, crop losses and disease. Finance, insurance, markets and climate-smart tools exist, but they rarely reach young farmers. This session brings both sides into one room ahead of the short rains.

Expected outcomes

Consented matchmaking introductions between young farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, lenders, insurers, input suppliers, off-takers and programmes, sent within five working days; a short-rains preparedness checklist for homes, farms and businesses; and a recording and short summary shared with every registrant.

Target audience

Young people and graduates interested in agribusiness, smallholder and commercial farmers, farmer groups and cooperatives, agri-lenders and insurers, input suppliers, off-takers and processors, agri-tech platforms, county agriculture teams, development partners and the public, in Kenya and across Africa.

Welcome message

Welcome notes

From: Events & Communications Lead, Events by Cara

Karibu, and welcome. Most of the food on Kenyan tables is grown by farmers whose average age keeps rising, while millions of young people look for work. Farming can be a profitable business, and it is one of the surest paths to feeding our families. With the short rains approaching, it is also the right moment to protect homes, farms, health and businesses from floods and crop loss. During the session, you will hear from global and local partners, agri-lenders, insurers, off-takers, agri-tech platforms and young farmers who are making it work, and you will leave with introductions to people who can help you act.

There will be time for your own questions to the panel. We look forward to welcoming you, and to a conversation that leads somewhere.
