About the event

Purpose of the event

To help people who are unemployed, especially young people and women in Kenya and across Africa, create their own income: by starting businesses, working online and employing themselves, with the support of development-partner programmes, banks, corporate CSR and training providers. The session turns the conversation into real introductions.

Objectives

1. Show practical routes to self-employment: starting and growing a business, and earning through online work. 2. Connect job seekers and young entrepreneurs with development-partner programmes, bank and SACCO products, corporate CSR initiatives and training providers. 3. Showcase solutions that already work for job matching, skills, online work and small-business finance. 4. Advance SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Background

Two in three young Kenyans are without work, and more than a million join the labour market every year. Formal jobs cannot absorb them all. Funding, training and online work opportunities exist, but they rarely reach the people who need them. This session brings both sides into one room.

Expected outcomes

Consented matchmaking introductions between job seekers, entrepreneurs, funders and support programmes, sent within five working days; clear next steps for starting a business or earning online; and a recording and short summary shared with every registrant.

Target audience

Unemployed young people and graduates, women entrepreneurs, small businesses, development partners, banks and SACCOs, corporate CSR teams, online work platforms, training providers and the public, in Kenya and across Africa.

Welcome notes

From: Events & Communications Lead, Events by Cara

Karibu, and welcome to Creating Your Own Opportunities, the first in a series of online matchmaking sessions, held every two months, that bring together the people living with an everyday challenge and the people building solutions to it. We begin with the issue that affects more Kenyans than any other: finding work, or creating it.

To the young people, job seekers and small business owners taking part: you will hear practical routes into business, online work and funding, and you will leave with introductions to people who can help you act.

To our speakers, panellists and host: your experience and your stories will be what people remember and act on. We are grateful for your time.

To government, development partners, banks, foundations and the organisations showcasing their programmes: this is a direct line to the young people your programmes are designed for. We invite you to explain how to apply, hear their questions first-hand, and meet them one-to-one in the matchmaking hour.

To our creators and media partners: thank you for carrying these conversations to the people who need them most.

We look forward to welcoming you all on Thursday 28 January 2027, and to a conversation that leads somewhere.
